Mt. Dhaulagiri Expedition

Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m.), the seventh highest mountain in the world is an enormous Himalayan massif which lies in the northwest of touristic city of Pokhara. This mountain is known as “the mother of snow.”In the Sanskrit word, Davala Giri means White Mountain thus it is popular as “The White Mountain” to the foreigners. This peak lies in the opposite from Mt. Annapurna. It rises above the Kali Gandaki Gorge over the 7,000m.This mountain was discovered in 1808AD and the news of its discovery left the rest of the world dubious. After its discovery it was believed that it is to be the highest mountain in the world. The glory of the highest peak remains for 30 years. Then after, Mt. Kanchenjunga took its place. At first, it is considered that climbing to his mountain is impossible due to its formidable look after its exposure. As it has got glory for as the highest mountain, many attempts had been made to climb on this mountain since 1950s however, none of them become successful. The first ascent is made on May 1, 1960 by the four swiss-Austrian team and two sherpas and they climbed via the Northeast ridge, the normal route of Mt. Dawalagiri. This normal route is considered to be a reasonable climb with the moderate avalanche danger and it can be climbed up with a short technical climbing sections.
