Tibet General information

Tibet is a plateau region in Asia, north-east of the Himalayas and currently governed under the People's Republic of China. Basically, it is the traditional homeland of the Tibetan people which include different other ethnic groups such as Monpas, Qiang, and Lhobas. After 1951, the land is also inhabited by considerable numbers of Han and Hui people. Often called as “Roof of the World”, Tibet is the highest region on earth, with an average elevation of 4,900 metres.

Though tourism has become a growing industry in Tibet in recent decades, basically the economy of Tibet is dominated by subsistence agriculture. The Tibetan Buddhism is the dominant religion in Tibet whereas an indigenous religion, Bön was practiced before 7th century. In addition to it there are also some minority group of Muslim and Christian. Tibetan Buddhism has chief influence on the art, music, festivals and lifestyle of the region. Tibetan art and architecture reveals Chinese, Nepalese and Indian influences. Common foods in Tibet are roasted barley, yak meat, and butter tea.

Visa Information

Passport:

A traveler to Tibet should carry his/her passport valid at least for next six months. Passport should have plenty of blank pages for visas, entry and reentry stamps and extensions. Besides, it is advantage to carry other identity cards like student card or driving license. Loosing passport in Tibet may be a very bad luck, as you can issue new one only from Beijing but not from other parts.

Visa-Travel Permit :
Foreign travelers to Tibet are required to obtain special Group Visa/Permit. The visa processing is initiated only after you book a trip with a authentic travel agency. Original passport has to be submitted along with the Visa Application Letter (Invitation Letter) of Tibetan Tourism Authority to the Chinese Embassy in Nepal or abroad. We are eligible to process your visa/permit and can fax you the Visa Application Letter (Invitation Letter) if you wish to apply the visa abroad. Normally, Chinese embassy of Kathmandu works on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 09:30 am to 11:00 am. The regular visa fee is USD 26 and you can collect the passport on the third working day. For emergency processing, there will be an extra fee.
